Jesus’ First Invitation: See Who I Am

“Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.

John 1:39 NLT

‬‬““Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.”

John 1:46 NLT

Come and see.

A simple invitation.

Take a look. Check it out. Seek the truth. Seek out Jesus. See who He is.

Andrew, John, Peter, Philip, and Nathanael were following John the Baptist. What had he challenged them to do?

“The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

John 1:29 NLT

Look! The Lamb of God! Open your eyes. See Him. See the truth about Him. See who He is.

“As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!””

John 1:36 NLT

‬‬Look! The Lamb of God! See Him. Seek Him.

What was the truth that was revealed to them about Jesus, by both John the Baptist and Jesus Himself?

1. Jesus is the Lamb of God.

2. Jesus takes away sin (He’s the Savior).

3. Jesus is the Chosen One of God.

“I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the Chosen One of God. ””

John 1:34 NLT

‬‬4. Jesus is Lord.

“John replied in the words of the prophet Isaiah: “I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Clear the way for the Lord’s coming!’””

John 1:23 NLT

5. Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ.

“Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ” ).”

John 1:41 NLT

6. Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecy.

“Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.””

John 1:45 NLT

7. Jesus is a Rabbi.

8. Jesus is the Son of God.

9. Jesus is the King of Israel.

“Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!””

John 1:49 NLT

10. Jesus is the Son of Man.

“Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth. ””

John 1:51 NLT

The Apostle John begins his Gospel by declaring other truths about Jesus. I wonder if Jesus had revealed these truths to John and Andrew in their “Come and See” conversation that day?

1. Jesus is the Word.

2. Jesus is God.

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

John 1:1 NLT

3. Jesus is Creator.

“God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.”

John 1:3 NLT

4. Jesus is the Light.

5. Jesus is the Life.

“The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.”

John 1:4 NLT

6. Jesus is the God-man.

7. Jesus is Love.

8. Jesus is Faithful.

9. Jesus is Full of God’s Glory.

“So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.”

John 1:14 NLT

10. Jesus is the Unique One, God’s One and Only Son.

“No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.”

John 1:18 NLT

Wow! That’s at least twenty truths in John 1 revealed about the identity of Jesus for those who are willing to “Come and See!”
