How Discovery Bible Study Impacts Church Growth
I was a man who trusted pastors rather than trusting in God.
It all began with an invitation. Mariko invited me to a Disciple Making Movement (DMM) training in the village where I lived. The next day I attended the training, and we discovered a lot of things that opened up my mind. Through this training, I realized I was wrong to trust only in pastors rather than in Jesus. There was a growing interest to discover the Truth. Beyond head knowledge, I was encouraged to practice obedience and start to share what I learn with others.
My obedience has led me to share with my closest friends and a lady named Mercy. She and I started a Discovery Bible Study (DBS) in her home, where her parents also live. Mercy’s parents were not Christ followers, but through discovery, they believed in Christ. Her father is an influential village leader, and he called neighbors to come and be part of the DBS. The DBS has grown strong, and some members have since started their own DBSs in nearby villages.
Discovery Bible Study Extending to Other Churches
Mercy extended DMM to her church by sharing it with her pastor, who was eager to learn more. The pastor “owned” the DMM vision and started to apply it in his church. Now, every Sunday morning is started with discovery rather than the usual sermon.
Discovery enables the members to understand and obey, which equips them to start reaching out to others, something the pastor used to do alone. This has changed the church and leaders from other denominations, as they were surprised at what they saw happening; every member is committed to disciple-making. They want to use the DMM strategies in their own churches.
DMM opens the way for this church to engage other churches. This pastor shares with them about DMM, and they realize that this is the best way to do the work of God, and some of them own it and are now practicing it in their churches.
